The First Saturday in May

The Kentucky Derby is traditionally held on the first Saturday in May and it is a very special time for us in Louisville. Derby Day is lots of fun and we always host a party. We spend the day watching the races and having fun with family and friends. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, everything was postponed this year. The Kentucky Derby and all of the Kentucky Derby Festival events have been rescheduled for later this year, with the hopes that it will be safer to have them when we know more about the virus and have better ways to treat those that become infected.

Despite the fact that everything was postponed, we still managed to have a very fun "Derby Day." We woke up and made a delicious breakfast, while watching news coverage and shows from previous Derby Days. We even made Bloody Marys to make the morning feel extra special! Later on, we did a chalk drawing of Secretariat. Carl and I then got dressed up, just like we would on any other Derby Day. We spent a lot of the afternoon making some traditional Derby food and drinks. We even watched a virtual race featuring past Triple Crown Winners! It was definitely the strangest Derby Day I have ever experienced, but it was still lots of fun and it will be fondly remembered.
